Reston Farmers Market and Baron Cameron Park

1609 Washington Plaza N,

Property Description

The town of Reston is located on the north end of Fairfax County, Virginia and Reston Farmers Market was voted the Best Farmers Market in Northern Virginia in 2013 by Virginia Living Magazine.  They had a great variety of vendors and, although the food was more expensive than the Manassas Farmers Market, they had more meat and seafood variety as well as many craft vendors.  In fact the craft vendors pretty much doubles the size of this market and if you’re looking for homemade gifts, this would be a fun place to check out on a Saturday morning.

We bought a bucket of heirloom tomato “seconds” that are slightly bruised and will be using it to make homemade tomato sauce.  We also bought some buckboard shoulder bacon, that is supposed to be leaner than regular bacon, and we’ll be frying up some breakfast sausage tomorrow morning too!  We visited Valentine’s for some free-range grass-fed beef short ribs and my wife cooked those for dinner tonight.  Since my parents invited themselves to dinner on short-notice, she had to augment her beef short ribs and purchased more from the local H-Mart.  My mom thought the one from the farmers market was “beefier” and had more flavor than the ones from H-Mart, but I couldn’t really notice a difference.  Even if taste was the same, at least you know it’s a healthier option!

When you have three kids in tow, you’ve got to lay some ground rules from all the sampling at these places.  Fortunately, my kids are getting better with their “sampling manners” and the vendors are really nice and patient.  We try to feed our kids a hearty breakfast before we head out too, which is what we did this morning.  Consequently, we didn’t walk away from this market with a bag of kettle corn for breakfast or some home-baked pastries or breads like we normally do.

After doing your shopping, you might want to check out Baron Cameron Park right around the corner.  We brought our bikes with us and explored the trails at this park and it was the perfect place for beginner riders.  Although there are a lot of uphill and downhills, some of the off-road trails are great for kids to hone their skills.  If biking isn’t your thing, we also saw a basketball court, tennis courts, lots of teams playing baseball and even people fishing!  There is also a community garden in this park.  Autumn took Sabrina to the empty community garden parking lot to ride around since Sabrina is still learning how to brake and those hills were a bit too steep for her!
