Potomac Baptist – Church in Potomac Falls
20747 Lowes Island Boulevard, Potomac Falls
I finally had a chance to visit the church that my former pastor, Scott Hesler, pastored. He was the pastor over the English Ministry when I was attending Chinese Christian Church in Silver Spring. These were during my High School years and I only spent 11th and 12th grade in Maryland schools before heading off to college at the University of Rochester. Although my time was short, my spiritual formation through this church had a very lasting impact on my life. It was through their youth group, called Teens Group, that I really started to put some meat on my faith and develop deeper convictions about Jesus Christ as the leader in my life. I would come back to this church, when visiting home from college and had the privilege of listen to Pastor Scott preach. Before I joined the Army after graduation, I remember coming to church in my Class A uniform and Pastor Scott telling the congregation that I would be a missionary in the Army, and the government gets to pay my way:) I still remember some of Scott’s preaching on a Sermon on the Mount series over 10 years ago!
When I arrived at the church, Potomac Baptist, we were running a little behind and I think we either missed the children’s ministry slot or it was “on break” for that week so we had our kids in the service with us. (Update: Scott said their children’s ministry takes a break every August). Pastor Scott was teaching about the history of the church and the way they conducted service that week was supposed to reflect some of the early church practices. Therefore, the worship we experienced that day was pretty simple with just a solo guitarist…no drums and no electric guitar. However, my guess is that on an “ordinary” Sunday, you probably won’t expect to experience a loud rock-style type of worship anyway. The people were very friendly and one of the elders, Phil, came up to me and we even had lunch afterwards during the week so we could introduce some folks to each other.
If you’re looking for a solid church with excellent preaching in the Sterling, Virginia area, I would definitely give this place a visit. The church is located less than 20 minutes from Reston Town Center, Tyson’s Corner and Leesburg and worship service starts at 10:30am.
